Porta Potty Tips for South Carolina Hurricane Season

Porta potties during hurricane season in SC need a plan before the storm and a fast restart after it, for homes, jobsites and recovery crews.

Live answer Mon–Sat 7 AM–7 PM. Phone quotes take about 5 minutes.

When is hurricane season in South Carolina?

Hurricane season in South Carolina runs from June 1 to November 30 each year. The busiest stretch for storms is usually late summer into fall. Florence sits inland, but tropical storms still bring high wind, heavy rain and flooding to the Pee Dee region.

Inland wind is enough to tip an empty or half-full unit. Rain can turn a firm spot soft in a day.

The state's emergency agency keeps a plain guide on hurricane preparedness for every county.

What happens to my rented porta potty before a storm?

Before a named storm, Jeremy Rental Works lays units down, straps them, or picks them up on request. A unit lying on its back can't blow over. Strapping to a fixed post works for units that need to stay usable until the wind arrives. Call us to set the plan.

Tell us how long you need the unit before the storm. Crews often work until the day before landfall.

We work through our routes in order, so an early call gets an earlier slot.

Should I lay down a porta potty myself?

Leave laying down a porta potty to our crew. A unit that has been used has waste in its 60-gallon tank, and tipping it by hand can spill that waste and hurt someone. A unit that tips from misuse is the renter's cost under our rental terms.

If wind is already blowing and you can't reach us, keep people away from the unit. Don't stand downwind of it.

Read the damage rules in our rental terms before storm season starts.

Should I ask for pickup before the storm?

Ask for pickup before a storm if the job or event is stopping anyway. Long-term billing stops the day you request pickup, and we pick up within 2 business days. Call when a storm is first named for our area, not the day before landfall, so the truck can reach you.

Event renters with a storm in the forecast can move the date. Weather reschedules are free with 24 hours' notice.

Jobsites that will restart right after the storm often keep the unit and have it laid down instead.

How fast can recovery crews get porta potties after a storm?

Recovery crews in the Florence area can get same-day porta potty delivery when they call by 12 noon, Monday to Saturday, and a truck is open. Deliveries start once roads are safe and open. Tree crews, roofers and debris haulers book the most units in the days after a storm.

Have the site address, crew size and how long you expect to work. Contractors with an approved account can be invoiced.

Crews that move from street to street do well with a trailer-mounted unit they can tow. See jobsite toilets for crew setups.

How many porta potties does a cleanup crew need?

OSHA rule 1926.51 requires at least 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. Crews of 20 or more need 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. A standard unit has 1 seat and 1 urinal. We suggest 1 unit per 10 workers with weekly service.

That suggestion is our plan, not the law. Long, hot cleanup days fill units faster, so add a second weekly visit when needed.

OSHA also requires handwashing at jobsites. Read the full rule at OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51, and add hand wash stations for crews handling debris.

Where should units go at debris sites and shelters?

At debris sites and storm shelters, set porta potties on high, firm ground away from low spots that flood. Keep them at least 10 feet from downed or low wires and out of the paths that loaders and trucks use. Add 1 wheelchair-accessible unit at any shelter open to the public.

Group the units so the service truck can reach them in one stop. That keeps visits quick when routes are packed.

Sites that run for weeks should go on a monthly rental with weekly service. See the wheelchair-accessible unit page for shelter setups.

Hurricane season questions

Will you deliver porta potties during a hurricane warning?

Deliveries stop when roads or wind make driving unsafe, and start again once roads are open. Delivery hours are 7 AM to 7 PM, Monday to Saturday. Call early so your unit is placed before the storm arrives.

What does same-day delivery cost for a storm cleanup crew?

Same-day delivery adds a fee starting at $75, on top of the unit price. A standard jobsite unit on a monthly plan starts at $165 per 28-day cycle plus a $60 one-time delivery, with weekly service included.

A hurricane is coming the weekend of my event. What are my options?

Watch the storm track early. Moving your date with at least 24 hours' notice costs nothing, so pick a new weekend once the forecast clears. Calling the event off for good 48 or more hours before delivery earns a full refund. Units already on site can be laid down, strapped or hauled off before landfall.

Can a restroom trailer run at a storm shelter without power?

A restroom trailer can run on our generator add-on, from $175 per day, and our water tank add-on, from $150. That lets a shelter use trailer restrooms when the grid is down.

Where should a storm cleanup crew set the porta potty?

Set it on the highest firm, level ground near the work, away from standing water, downed lines and debris piles. Keep it 10 feet from low wires and off septic lids. Mark the spot with a cone or flag so the driver can place it without anyone home.
