How Many Porta Potties Do I Need for My Event or Jobsite?
Plan 1 standard porta potty for every 50 guests at an event of up to 4 hours, then add whole units for longer events and alcohol. Crews follow OSHA 1926.51.
- Base rule: 1 standard unit per 50 guests, rounded up, for events up to 4 hours.
- Add for time: Over 4 hours: add 1 unit, plus 1 more for each full 100 guests past 100.
- Add for alcohol: Alcohol served: add the same number again, because guests visit more often.
- Accessible: At least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit, and 1 in every 20 units at public events.
- Jobsites: OSHA: 1 toilet for up to 20 workers; we advise 1 unit per 10 workers with weekly service.

Method: 1 unit per 50 guests up to 4 hours, then whole-unit add-ons shown above. Jobsite minimum from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. Confirm event rules with your venue or permit office.
How do I calculate the number of porta potties for an event?
Start with 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests, rounded up, for an event up to 4 hours. If the event runs longer than 4 hours, add 1 unit, plus 1 for each full 100 guests beyond 100. If alcohol is served, add that same number again. Then make at least 1 unit wheelchair-accessible.
Worked example: 150-guest wedding, 5 hours, open bar
- Base. 150 guests ÷ 50 = 3 units.
- Over 4 hours. 150 guests has 1 full hundred, so add 1 unit. Total 4.
- Alcohol. Add 1 more unit. Total 5.
- Accessible. Make 1 of the 5 a wheelchair-accessible unit.
- Food. With dinner served, add 2 hand wash stations (5 toilets ÷ 3, rounded up), or pick sink units.
How many porta potties do I need per number of guests?
A 100-guest party of up to 4 hours needs 2 standard porta potties, and 4 if it runs longer with alcohol. A 300-guest event needs 6 units for 4 hours and 12 for a long event with alcohol. The chart below applies the same whole-unit steps to every guest count from 25 to 1,000.
| Guests | Up to 4 hrs | Over 4 hrs | Up to 4 hrs + alcohol | Over 4 hrs + alcohol | Wheelchair-accessible (at the largest count, included) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 1 |
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 1 |
| 75 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 1 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 1 |
| 150 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 5 | 1 |
| 200 | 4 | 6 | 6 | 8 | 1 |
| 250 | 5 | 7 | 7 | 9 | 1 |
| 300 | 6 | 9 | 9 | 12 | 1 |
| 500 | 10 | 15 | 15 | 20 | 1 |
| 750 | 15 | 22 | 22 | 29 | 2 |
| 1000 | 20 | 30 | 30 | 40 | 2 |
Restroom trailers count each stall as about 1 standard unit, so a 3-stall trailer covers about 150 guests for 4 hours. Pair a trailer with 1 wheelchair-accessible unit, since trailers have steps.
How many porta potties does OSHA require on a construction site?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1 requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. Above 20 workers, the rule is 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. Above 200 workers, it is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers. A standard unit holds 1 seat and 1 urinal.
| Workers | OSHA minimum | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | 1 | 1 |
| 11–20 | 1 | 2 |
| 21–40 | 1 | 3–4 |
| 41–80 | 2 | 5–8 |
| 81–200 | 3–5 | 9–20 |
The legal minimum comes from OSHA 1926.51. Our recommendation is not a law. It keeps units usable between weekly visits in Florence heat. Instead of more units, you can add a second weekly service. Handwashing rules are in 1926.51(f); see the construction toilet page for crew setups.
How many hand wash stations and accessible units should I add?
Add 1 hand wash station for every 3 toilets when food is served, rounded up. For public events, make at least 5% of units in each cluster wheelchair-accessible under 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2, which is 1 in every 20. Private parties still benefit from 1 accessible unit for older guests.
- 6 toilets with a food truck: 2 hand wash stations.
- 2 clusters of 10 units at a festival: 1 accessible unit in each cluster.
- Deluxe units with sinks can replace hand wash stations for small events.
Accessibility rules: ADA Standards section 213. Confirm event rules with your venue or permit office.

Sizing questions
How many porta potties for 100 guests?
A 100-guest event of up to 4 hours needs 2 standard units. Add 1 if it runs longer than 4 hours and 1 more if alcohol is served, for up to 4 units. Make 1 of them wheelchair-accessible.
How many porta potties for 200 guests with alcohol?
A 200-guest event with alcohol needs 6 units for up to 4 hours (4 base plus 2 for alcohol). If it runs longer than 4 hours, add 2 more for a total of 8, with at least 1 wheelchair-accessible.

The method above already plans for a mixed crowd. If most guests are women, one easy fix is to swap 1 or 2 standard units for sink units or add 1 unit to shorten lines at peak times.
How many porta potties for a 5K run or walk?
Runners use restrooms mostly in the 30 minutes before the start. Plan 1 unit per 50 participants near the start line, plus 1 at the finish area. Add a hand wash station if food is served after the race.
Is one porta potty enough for a small backyard party?
One standard unit covers up to 50 guests for 4 hours. With alcohol or a longer party, 2 units keep lines short. Families with an inside bathroom often rent 1 unit for everyone outside.
