How many toilets does OSHA require on a construction site?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1 sets the jobsite minimum. A crew of 20 or fewer workers needs 1 toilet. From 20 workers up, the rule calls for 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. At 200 or more workers, the count drops to 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50.
A standard unit has 1 seat and 1 urinal, so it counts once in the table. The full rule is on the OSHA 1926.51 sanitation page. Table D-1 applies to every jobsite. Where there is no sanitary sewer, 1926.51(c)(3) lists the allowed toilet types, and chemical toilets are one of them.
| Workers on site | OSHA minimum (Table D-1) | What we suggest with weekly service |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 10 | 1 toilet | 1 standard unit |
| 11 to 20 | 1 toilet | 2 standard units |
| 21 to 40 | 1 seat and 1 urinal (1 unit) | 3 to 4 units |
| 41 to 80 | 2 seats and 2 urinals (2 units) | 5 to 8 units, or fewer units with a second weekly service |
The OSHA count is the legal floor, not a comfort target. A standard unit holds about 200 uses between services. Ten workers using it twice a day for 5 days is about 100 uses, which leaves room for overtime and hot weather.
How often is a jobsite porta potty cleaned?
A long-term jobsite porta potty gets 1 service visit every week. The driver pumps the tank, washes the inside, adds deodorizer, restocks toilet paper and sanitizer, and refills water on sink units. The service day follows our route, about every 7 days. Busy summer jobs can add a second visit.
Florence summers run in the 90s from June to August. Heat speeds up odor, so set the unit in shade with the door away from afternoon sun. Above 10 workers per unit in July and August, a second weekly visit keeps it usable. Our summer heat guide has more tips.
- Keep the path from the road to the unit clear of lumber, block and trenches.
- Leave the gate code or key for the service driver.
- Set the unit at least 10 ft from low wires and off any septic lid.

Does a construction crew need a hand wash station?
OSHA 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities near the work for crews applying paint, coatings, herbicides, insecticides or other harmful materials. Our hand wash station has 2 sinks, foot pumps and about 30 gallons of water, enough for about 500 washes per fill. Hand sanitizer alone is not a washing facility.
Painters, drywall finishers, concrete crews and anyone mixing chemicals should have soap and water close by. Pair one two-sink hand wash station with your toilets, or choose a deluxe unit with a sink inside for a small crew. Water is refilled on the weekly visit.
Do I need a porta potty for a home remodel or roofing job?
A homeowner acting as their own contractor usually needs 1 standard unit for a remodel, a new roof or an ADU build. Crews should not use the house bathroom while plumbing is open or floors are new. A standard unit fits through a 48-inch gate and sits on grass, gravel or a driveway.
- Bathroom or kitchen remodel: the only toilet in the house may be out for weeks.
- Roofing: a crew of 6 to 10 for a few days keeps traffic out of your home.
- Framing a new home: 1 unit from slab to drywall, then add a second when trades stack up.
- ADU or garage apartment: place it near the work, not by the front door.
Our guide on keeping a toilet during a remodel or septic repair walks through the timing.

Can my company get invoiced for jobsite toilets?
Contractors with an approved account can be invoiced instead of paying by card at booking. One account can cover several jobsites, and each unit is billed every 28 days at its own job address. A pickup request stops billing for that unit, while the rest of your sites keep running.
Multi-unit sites
Large sites do better with units spread out than lined up in one corner. Put one near the trailer and one near the far end of the build. Tell us where the service truck can park so weekly visits stay on schedule.
Road crews and moving work
Paving, utility and right-of-way crews move every few days. A trailer-mounted unit is a standard toilet on a small towable trailer, so it follows the crew down the road. Units for plant work and long shutdowns are covered on our industrial restroom page.
Every jobsite unit runs on our 28-day long-term plan with weekly service built in.

How many units does my crew need?
Our crew rule is 1 standard unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week with weekly service. A 25-person framing crew needs 3 units under that rule, even though the OSHA minimum is 1. Pick the Jobsite crew tab below and enter your head count to see the numbers.
Porta potty calculator
Method: 1 unit per 50 guests up to 4 hours, then whole-unit add-ons shown above. Jobsite minimum from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. Confirm event rules with your venue or permit office.
Count the most workers on site on your busiest day, not the average. Subs come and go, and the toilet has to carry the peak.
When the count runs past 10 per unit, you have two choices: add another standard porta potty, or add a second service visit each week. In summer, the extra visit often works better than another unit.
Jobsite porta potty questions
How much does a porta potty cost per month on a Florence jobsite?
A standard jobsite unit starts at $165 per 28-day cycle, plus a one-time $60 delivery charge on the first cycle. Weekly service is included. A towable trailer-mounted unit starts at $260 per cycle plus $60 delivery. Tax is extra, and the phone quote is final.
What does a second weekly service visit cost on a summer jobsite?
An extra service visit is $65. Summer jobs with more than 10 workers on one unit often add it from June through August, when heat speeds up odor.
Do roofers and painters on a short job pay the monthly rate?
A job of 7 days or less uses the flat short-term price, from $175 for a standard unit with delivery and pickup. A job that runs past 7 days goes on the 28-day plan from $165 plus $60 delivery, with weekly service included.
Can I lock the jobsite toilet at night?
A lock hasp is available on request. Bring your own padlock and leave the code or key for the service driver so the weekly visit can happen.
Who pays if the unit is tipped over or vandalized on site?
The renter pays for vandalism, fire, tipping caused by misuse and excessive mess. Normal wear is on us. Keep the unit out of equipment lanes and away from where loaders turn.
Can the unit sit where the service truck cannot drive?
Our crew can roll a standard unit on a dolly about 50 feet from the truck at delivery. The service truck still needs to get close every week, so pick a spot near a drive or road edge and tell us about soft ground.
